THE SANDPIPER TRUST’S MEDICAL ADVISERS
Dr Ewen Mcleod, GP Ballater, and Dr Colville Laird , GP Aucherarder, were appointed as the Sandpiper Trust’s medical advisers. They and the BASICS organization have been responsible for masterminding the concept and development of the Sandpiper Bag. The BASICS organization is an independent charity responsible for the provision of emergency training programmes for doctors and nurses in Scotland and is therefore a natural partner for the Sandpiper Trust.
In 2004 BASICS set up their permanent offices in Auchterarder calling the building Sandpiper House after the Trust as affirmation of their close association with the charity. From here a comprehensive training mechanism has been established on the back of the standardised Sandpiper Bag which is now recognised internationally as being appropriate equipment for emergency response.
BASICS TRAINING PROGRAMMES
Brian Carlin, Assistant Director of Education, BASICS Scotland, writes
:
“ The core work of BASICS Scotland has always been to give medical,
nursing staff and Ambulance personnel the skills to deal with any trauma and
cardiac emergency in their community and practice areas. Delivery of emergency
care in Scotland is made more difficult due to the geographical problems of
working and practicing in rural and remote areas and creates unique problems
which BASICS training takes into consideration when planning their courses.
It was obvious to me early on that there was no system for equipping doctors
and nurses with this vital equipment until Sandpiper became involved with BASICS.
The Sandpiper bag provides any doctor or nurse who may work in isolation with
the ‘tools to do the job’ by giving the people that have been trained
in life saving skills the ability to potentially deal with a seriously ill or
injured patient until support from other services arrives and ensures that the
casualty can be stabilised and reach definitive care. There is no other arrangement
in the UK to compare with Basics Education Scotland and Sandpiper Trust and
I often receive comments from other organisations indicating how impressed they
are that not only can we deliver good education, but also that we can provide
life saving equipment as part of the course.”
