IMPROVING EMERGENCY CARE IN RURAL SCOTLAND

SANDPIPER BAGS

610 Sandpiper bags costing £1000 each are now located with doctors and nurses in rural Scotland !

The Sandpiper Trust provides rural medical practitioners with appropriate emergency medical equipment known as The Sandpiper Bag. The Sandpiper Bag enables lifesaving “ pre-hospital “ procedures to be carried out during that critical period known as the “Golden Hour”. Sandpiper Bags with their standardised layout and contents have now become widely recognised as an international standard for immediate care. The Trust aims is to continue supplying Sandpiper bags to all doctors and nurses who undergo emergency medical training provided by BASICS or a similar organization for use in remote and rural parts of Scotland.

VEHICLE LOCATORS - £1500 each

In remote and rural parts of Scotland the response time for an ambulance to reach the scene of an accident may be considerable due to distance and prior call on their services. In order to try and help improve this response time the Sandpiper Trust has initiated a pilot project in partnership with the Scottish Ambulance Service whereby medics who hold a Sandpiper Bag are linked to the Emergency Services Control Centre via a satellite vehicle locator system. The pilot scheme was introduced in Ballater in August 2006, and by January 2007 the system had been used successfully used on fourteen occasions, allowing for a significantly improved response time to emergency situations. A further 19 units are also undergoing assessment in the Borders and Dumfriesshire. It is hoped that following a successful pilot scheme this initiative can be extended throughout Scotland so that maximum benefit may be derived from the Sandpiper Bag and the dedicated medics who use them.

IMMEDIATE CARE

Whilst the aim of the Sandpiper Trust is to promote and support initiatives that help improve immediate care in Scotland, Sandpiper Bags have also now been used on trips to Ladach, South Georgia and Kenya and promoted at conferences in Canada, Australia, Japan, Scandinavia, Iceland and throughout Europe.

TRAINING MANNEQUIN £7500 each

This state of the art mannequin can simulate an accident or condition in a very realistic way and should help raise the level of experience of doctors and nurses. It is hoped that it will be possible to add a paediatric mannequin to the BASICS equipment in the near future.

DEFIBRILLATORS £3000 each

The Trust, in partnership with the British Heart Foundation, have assisted in the provision of defibrillators in special cases to rural doctors and practice particularly in more remote areas, and will continue to do so in the future.
