This event was held at Blair Drummond Safari Park by kind permission of Jamie Muir (seen here being extricated by a Basics Team) on 29th September 2011.
The purpose of the day was to showcase the work the trust do in partnership with BASICS Scotland. We invited donors and supporters of the Trust to attend an afternoon event where BASICS doctors and paramedics demonstrated how the Sandpiper Trust contributes to immediate care in Scotland. There were also information stations explaining about the work of Basics and how this organising delivers courses all over Rural Scotland.
A further one hundred guests attended an evening function where the Basics crew demontrated their skills by extricating Jamie Muir from a crashed car.
The whole day was considered a great success, particularly in demontrating this invaluable partnership between The Sandpiper Trust and Basics Scotland and we hope to be able to host a few more similar events in the future.

Ashley Mitchell, Tommy Barbour-Fleming, Ben Braithwaite, Vicky Barbour-Fleming and Suzie Braithwaite completed the Berlin Marathon as well as organising a race night in the local hall to help boost funds. I think they had a bit of parental help as far as the Race night went but Marathon running was a diffenent matter. A few bicyle rides escorting training sessions were as far as that went. Total funds raised are close to a staggering £5000. Thanks to all of you and your support team.

Harry Barker, Renwick Drysdale, Angus Barge, Geordie Erskine and Russell Nimmo are our heros. Here is a brief description of what they were planning.
“The five of us are planning to swim the channel as a relay. This involves swimming 1 hour at a time each. This has to be an hour and cant be changed to 30 minutes if one person is struggling. There are tight rules on this hour. No swimmer is allowed to get out of the water or touch the boat during the hour. Even if the person has cramp or is sick then they have to stay in the water and away from the boat. A slight touch of the boat is an automatic disqualification.
The hour each carries on until we finally reach france – this may take from 13 hours (which is quick) to 20 hours. We are aiming to get to France in 15hours – roughly swimming 2 times each with some swimmers swimming 3 times each. – Fingers crossed.
Training has now picked up with only four weeks to go it is now make or break time. We are swimming 5 times a week in the Kinross Pool for an hour each time. However on top of that we are swimming in Loch Leven 3 times a week for 50 minutes to an hour. This is to help get us used to the cold. Harry Barker who swam the channel on his gap year on his own, is helping us with training. He lives in London and has now left it to us to train for the last 4 weeks. He has set us a tight training regime and is now all about trust. Other than that it is all done by ourselfs and we have asked no one for help through out the year. ”
I hope, having read this you will be wondering how they got on. Well I don’t really have the details nor do we have the final amount raised, that should follow shortly. They did complete the amazing challenge and are still in the process of counting the pennys. What an brilliant acheivement.

Ollie Nicol and his father Paul took on this challenge . Yet another amazing adventure. I think I quite like the idea of this trip. They completed the journey with not too many mishaps and in doing so managed to raise over £1000 for The Sandpiper Trust. Thank you Paul and Ollie. Cambridge must seem a little tame after that adventure.

Terry Duffy is still on his way around the world as part of the Clipper race. We have not established where he is but I am sure he will be maximizing his adventure and will either never wish to set foot on a boat again or never want to get off.
Above is the link for you to dip into where Terry is. It is a diary written by crew members telling of their experiences. Well worth a read.

All guests were welcomed with coffee and home baking, not to mention homemade soups and scones. The work on display was breath taking. A hugh amount of work went into the exhibition and they raised an astonishing £3000 . Thank you for choosing to support The Sandpiper Trust. We will let you know in due course where we have delivered your three bags to.
