The Sandpiper Trust is deeply saddened by the news of the sudden death of Dr Rachel Weldon GP for the small Hebridean Isles of Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna. Rachel was a huge supporter of The Sandpiper Trust and understood only too well the difficulties of working in remote and rural medical practices. Our thoughts are with Rachel’s family, friends and local communites where her presence and support will be greatly missed. More help is urgently needed to support those providing medical cover in remote and rural areas in Scotland.

BASICS Scotland is pleased to announce that a new member of clinical staff will be joining the organisation from April. Mr Graeme Ramage has been offered the post of Sandpiper Fellow and will join the Director of Education and Assistant Director of Education in directing courses. In addition, Graeme will also be involved in expanding BASICS Scotland’s portfolio of courses through the development of new educational and training initiatives.

We look forward to working with Graeme and wish him well in his new post.

“I recently gave a talk to the Glassel WRI and also slightly further afield up at Huntly, to the Strathbogie Womens Guild and as always I received a very warm reception from both groups and as a result those who have never heard of The Sandpiper Trust will help to spread the word. With 2 more talks planned in the North East in the next few weeks, hopefully knowledge of the trust will spread even further.

I was on the interview panel which was responsible for the recruitment of the post of Sandpiper Fellow to BASICS in Auchterarder and am pleased that the decision to recruit Graeme Ramage has been met with such enthusiasm from BASICS responders.

As the Emergency Care Centre for Aberdeen nears completion the artwork for the design of the curtain, funded by The Sandpiper Trust is complete and we await the first curtain sample. The curtains have been designed with images of Grampian landmarks which will hopefully be recognised by patients throughout the acute sector of NHS Grampian. We continue to be involved with the design 2 family waiting rooms adjacent to the resussitation department, 1 family sitting room adjacent to the Intensive Care Unit, the sanctuary and the main foyer area of the hospital. There is little doubt that Sandpiper’s involvement will make a positive difference to the families of patients attending the Emergency Care Centre.”

She sure is a busy beaver up there.

The Courier newspaper covered the presentation of a Defibulator to the Ochil Mountain Rescue from the trust. The presentation took place at the spectacular new Tiso Outdoor Store on the north side of Perth. Chris Tiso presented the defib to Dr Paul Holmes and his enthusiatic colleagues. The trust are indepted to Chris for his continued support.
