A Christmas note to The Sandpiper Trust
David Hogg,GP – Arran Medical Group
“The Pulse oximeters which you recently funded are a brilliant piece of kit.
A colleague was attending to an unwell child in our community hospital, who had suspected meningitis. We needed to get her to the mainland but the weather was too bad for the Helimed air ambulance to fly. We therefore had to request the Navy Sea King from HMS Gannet. Due to other operational constraints, it was decided that I should travel with the child in case her condition deteriorated en route.
It was my first helicopter transfer, and I had been warned about the limitations of monitoring patients in the back of such a noisy aircraft. Before leaving we attached my Sandpiper Oximeter to the child as it is particularly lightweight and easy to use. During the flight it enabled me to ensure that basic parameters weren’t changing significantly and enabled me to give relevant information to the hospital on arrival.
Thankfully the child did very well, and was discharged after a short admission. This is just one example of our dependence on Sandpiper kit – not just for treatment but also for reassurance in the context of normal parameters.”

A few days before Christmas Jessica Dickson met Heather Leask and other members of staff from The Glenmorangie Bottling Plant in Livingston. The staff had chosen to support our charity during 2011. Eric Foster ran in the Berlin Marathon and raised £705.36 . Jessica was presented with a cheque for a further £6431.39 . As a final fairwell we were also presented with a bottle of “Pride 1981” This 28 year old bottle is one of only 1000 . An unparalleled single malt, extra-matured for 10yrs in prized Sauternes casks. “This is a whisky of striking sophistication and complexity.” We look forward to putting this bottle up for auction at a suitable event in the future. In the meantime we would like to say thankyou to Heather Leask and her team in Livingston for their kindness and generosity. We have really enjoyed getting to know them.

“
Every year Anderson Strathern selects three charities to receive donations as an alternative to us sending Christmas cards to our clients and contacts. This year I am pleased to advise that The Sandpiper Trust has been chosen as one of our charities.”
They have kindly donated £500 to the trust. Thank you very much indeed for choosing to support our charity.

A disco at Blair Drummond hall saw the arrival of a new line in fashion wear. Brandishing the Sandpiper logo the ponyclub members put on a funky fashion show. The (very bad) photo here is to give you a taste of things to come. We will shortly have a gallery with a selection of garments which you will be able to order direct from the supplier with not only Sandpiper logos but others as well. Keep a look out. Thanks to Lisa Addison for getting this together.

Ok so the Himalayan Rescue Association of Nepal- HRA is a voluntary non-profit organization formed with an objective to reduce casualties in the Nepal Himalayas.
Link for further info http://www.himalayanrescue.org
i worked at Pheriche for 3 months in 2009 at a height of 4200m Looking after Local Sherpa People, Climbers & trekkers with a range of problems from life threatening altitude Sickness, Trauma to general ailments, a real mixed bag that sometime involved a walk of up to two hours for us to get to the patient if they were too sick.
Other than this they were delivered to us at all times of day and night on the back of porters or horses that sometimes involved a 5-6hr walk down to the clinic
seeing over 550 casualties in the 3 month stint, located on the everest climb / trek route.
And the Second bag was helicoptered from Kathmandu to Manang the second HRA Clinic on the Annapurna Circuit.
So the Sandpiper Bags will be a great help to the clinics as now they will have a response bag for emergency calls out of the clinic, up until they were delivered by myself we needed to throw Oxygen cylinders and vital gear we may need into our own walking rucksacks and just hope nothing had been forgot.
there will also be a third bag taken out to the Everest Base Camp clinic for the climbing season in 2012 by friends.
So I’m now very proud to say the Sandpiper Trust have now got the highest, remotest located sandpiper bag in the world at the highest medical clinic in the world at Pheriche At 4200m and will soon Have one at Everest Base Camp for the climbing season in march 2012 at 5300m

This event was held at Blair Drummond Safari Park by kind permission of Jamie Muir (seen here being extricated by a Basics Team) on 29th September 2011.
The purpose of the day was to showcase the work the trust do in partnership with BASICS Scotland. We invited donors and supporters of the Trust to attend an afternoon event where BASICS doctors and paramedics demonstrated how the Sandpiper Trust contributes to immediate care in Scotland. There were also information stations explaining about the work of Basics and how this organising delivers courses all over Rural Scotland.
A further one hundred guests attended an evening function where the Basics crew demontrated their skills by extricating Jamie Muir from a crashed car.
The whole day was considered a great success, particularly in demontrating this invaluable partnership between The Sandpiper Trust and Basics Scotland and we hope to be able to host a few more similar events in the future.

Ashley Mitchell, Tommy Barbour-Fleming, Ben Braithwaite, Vicky Barbour-Fleming and Suzie Braithwaite completed the Berlin Marathon as well as organising a race night in the local hall to help boost funds. I think they had a bit of parental help as far as the Race night went but Marathon running was a diffenent matter. A few bicyle rides escorting training sessions were as far as that went. Total funds raised are close to a staggering £5000. Thanks to all of you and your support team.
