The Sandpiper Bag

The Sandpiper Trust provides rural medical practitioners with appropriate emergency medical equipment known as The Sandpiper Bag. The Sandpiper Bag enables lifesaving “ pre-hospital “ procedures to be carried out during that critical period known as the “Golden Hour”. Sandpiper Bags with their standardised layout and contents have now become widely recognised as an international standard for Immediate Care.

The contents of the bag were designed by BASICS Scotland after extensive consultation and discussion with experts in the field of Immediate Care.

The contents, which are listed below, now include paediatric equipment that has been added following suggestions made by those doctors and nurses who hold and use the bags in the field.

The Sandpiper Bag itself is currently being redesigned incorporating improvements suggested during the last five years since the Trust was established. The Sandpiper Bag, with its familiar blue colour and Sandpiper logo is a fitting memorial to Sandy Dickson who drowned aged 14 while on holiday in a remote part of Canada.

The Trust extends its grateful thanks to all those involved in the emergence and subsequent evolution of the bag which is now know to have helped save lives throughout Scotland.
